Alcohol is probably the most accessible, harmful drug (legal BAC) around. The problem is increasingly worse with they out; data from 12-17 year olds compiled by the NSDHU found that an estimated 623,000-- 298,000 males and 325,000 females-- have an "alcohol problem". Though fatality isn't uncommon, it is definitely preventable. An approximated 88,000 deaths a year occur due to alcohol abuse. The harmful effects of alcoholism are evident, but their economic downsides might not be as apparent. The misuse of alcohol has led to various economic burdens in American households; $249 billion can be attributed to the misuse of the substance, most of which was caused by binge drinking. At stake, furthermore, is the welfare of children living within those households; an estimated 10% of children live with a parent going through alcoholism.
